Expand your knowledge of the physiological foundations of the vestibular system with our online course “Physiology 1” at the IVRT® teaching institute.

This course gives you an in-depth understanding of the complex mechanisms responsible for balance and spatial orientation of the body and shows you how these processes become relevant in diseases such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).

Course content:

  • Hair cells in the semicircular canals and otolith organs: Learn about the function of the hair cells in the semicircular canals and otolith organs, which serve as primary sensors for head movements and accelerations. Find out how these sensory cells form the basis for balance and vestibular reflexes.

  • Seminal knowledge: Learn how the semicircular canals and the extraocular muscles are connected and how this interaction works. This complex topic is visually presented using clear and easy-to-understand illustrations. With this knowledge, you will be able to precisely understand the characteristic nystagmus patterns for each individual semicircular canal.

  • Translation-vestibulo-ocular reflex (translation-VOR): learn about the physiological mechanisms behind the translation-VOR, an important reflex that stabilizes eye movements during linear head movements.

  • Ocular tilt reaction (OTR): find out how the OTR reacts to head tilt and adjusts the position of the eyes, as well as its relevance in the diagnosis of vestibular dysfunctions.
