Feeling that the ground is constantly shifting for weeks or even months after a ship or train journey is extremely tiring. But what does the prognosis look like? Mal de Débarquement (MdDS) from and what happens when the mental stress increases?
What you need to know about the course of MdDS:
- Strongly individual course: There is no fixed norm. In some affected individuals, the fluctuations disappear after three to five weeks, while in others they persist for six or even twelve months.
- Often spontaneous improvement: In most cases, the symptoms fortunately subside on their own after a few weeks or months.
- Risk of secondary PPPDMonths of constant anxiety and self-observation can often lead to secondary development of functional vertigo (PPPD), anxiety disorders or depressive phases.
- Accepting help is not a sign of weakness: If such psychologically distressing co-morbid conditions occur, it is absolutely advisable and important to seek therapeutic or psychological support.
- Not delusional: Just because the psyche reacts to this exceptional situation does not mean that the delusion arises „only in the mind“! Mal de Débarquement is a real neuro-otological disorder officially recognized by the Bárány Society with clear criteria.
