Vestibular neuritis: What is the trigger?

The exact causes of the inflammation of the vestibular nerve They are not yet 100% % understood medically, but the most common hypothesis is: reactivation of herpes viruses!

How this sudden nerve loss occurs in the body:

👉 Sleeping viruses: Many people are already infected with herpes viruses as children (e.g., with chickenpox). These viruses remain inactive in the body and „wait“ for an opportunity.

👉 The trigger for stress: In weakened immune systems or chronic stress, the body secretes more cortisol. Cortisol suppresses the immune system – the viruses are reactivated!

👉 Comparison with shingles: Just like with shingles, the reactivated viruses attack the nerve – in this case the vestibular nerve in the inner ear.

👉 The effect: The inflamed nerve dies, no longer transmits data to the brain and suddenly leads to massive rotational vertigo, nystagmus, and severe balance disorders!
