Expand your knowledge of the physiological principles of the vestibular system with our online course "Physiology 1" at the IVRT® training institute.

This course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the complex mechanisms responsible for the body's balance and spatial orientation and how these processes become relevant in conditions such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPLS).

Course content includes:

  • Hair cells in semicircular canals and macula organs: Learn more about the function of hair cells in the semicircular canals and macula organs, which serve as primary sensors for head movements and accelerations. Learn how these sensory cells form the basis for balance and vestibular reflexes.

  • Semicircular canal-eye muscle connections and relevance for BPLS: You will learn in detail which semicircular canal is connected to which eye muscle and how this interaction works. This complex topic is presented visually with clear and easy-to-understand illustrations. With this knowledge, you will be able to precisely understand the characteristic nystagmus patterns for each individual semicircular canal.

  • Translational Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex (Translational VOR): Learn the physiological mechanisms behind the translational VOR, an important reflex that stabilizes eye movements during linear head movements.

  • Ocular Tilt Reaction (OTR): Learn how the OTR reacts to head tilt and adjusts eye position, as well as its relevance in the diagnosis of vestibular dysfunction.
